Sean

Sean was parked outside of Asher’s house, two days later, trying to get the courage to go to the door. He’d received a text message from Asher the day before, short and simple.

My house. Five-thirty. Thursday.

He’d viewed the message for a long time, trying to decide what to do. He knew he had already agreed to go on a second date, but he was struggling to keep himself away from them as it was. He didn’t think this would help any.

As he watched, the front door opened, and Asher stood there, leaning against the doorframe. He didn’t beckon Sean in or do anything other than wait and study him. It calmed him a little to know that Asher was not pushy, at least in some things. He sat for a few more minutes, then got out and walked towards the house.

By the time he got there, he was breathing heavier than usual, the stress of his decision weighing on him. Stopping in front of Asher, he smiled, hoping he appeared confident.

“Sean.” Asher smiled as he spoke his name softly. Asher reached forward slowly, resting a hand on his shoulder and smoothing it down his arm to link their fingers together. Sean glanced down at their joined hands, breathing heavier still. He felt panic begin to set in and the fight or flight response awakening, but just a squeeze from Asher’s hand made it disappear, and Sean breathed easier.

Pretending nothing was amiss, Sean gazed at Asher again. “Are you going to invite me in?”

Asher nodded. “I was waiting for you to decide you wanted to come in.” He smiled and moved aside so Sean could enter without letting go of his hand.

“I won’t deny that it’s not an easy decision, but I’m here as I said I would be.”

That earned another squeeze of his hand, and he felt his body relax marginally.

“Well, I said I was going to cook for you, so I have. But I forgot to ask if you were allergic to anything, so I’m hoping that what I’ve made is all right.”

“And what’s that?” Sean asked.

“Lasagne with garlic bread and salad.”

“It sounds delicious. And to answer your concern, I’m not allergic to anything.” They walked towards the kitchen, and Asher deposited Sean on a stool at the counter before turning to walk away. Between one heartbeat and the next, Asher was back with his lips hovering over Sean’s.

“I don’t want to ask, but this time I will. Can I kiss you?” Asher’s words were spoken into Sean’s mouth but without any contact.

Sean felt himself leaning forward in answer, and their lips connected briefly several times before Asher pulled back.

“Thank you.” With that, he turned and walked to the oven.

Sean sat there barely breathing, eyes on Asher as he pottered around the kitchen, finishing up their dinner. He jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder and realised Asher was standing next to him.

“Breathe, Sean, breathe. Come on, you’ll pass out if you don’t breathe for me.” Asher’s
